The Anoroc Democratic Club

The above picture shows the club getting out the votes for Franklin Roosevelt and lets not forget candidate Peter McGarry for sheriff (when was the last time we voted for a sheriff??). The Anoroc building was built in 1924, at that time it was the largest Democratic Club in Queens.  The name Anoroc was chosen by the Club members, Anoroc is simply the word Corona spelt backwards, the “Indian sound” of the word was what had appealed to them .In the early days their Dinner-Dances drew up to 3000 people and were held in the Waldorf Astoria Ballroom.  This building still stands at 45-23 47th street with little changes.  Note in the picture the empty lot on the right, Billharz Plumbing  bought the lot and built its business there, it still stands with its third generation of plumbers.  (Circa 1932)
